Tax Bills Due

More than 500,000 people who used a tax agent to lodge their 2004 tax return have income tax bills that are due on Tuesday 22 March.

Tax Commissioner Michael Carmody urged people to check their notice of assessment so that they can pay on time and avoid interest charges.

"Not everyone has the same due date. People need to check their notice to find out when their payment is due," Mr Carmody said.

There are a range of convenient payment options including:

  • BPAY
  • direct credit
  • in person at any Australia Post Office. Post offices accept payment by cheque, cash (less than $3,000) or EFTPOS, or
  • mail a cheque or money order to the address printed on the payment advice slip. The payment advice slip should be sent with the payment.

If people have reasons why they cannot pay their tax bill on time and need a payment arrangement, they should call the Tax Office on 13 11 42 to discuss their circumstances. They should have their tax file number and notice of assessment handy when they call.
